I still have a gazillion questions even though I've done as much research as I could absorb...All this talk about piles of healthy happy poo...oh my! Today while cleaning Rigel & Sirius' cage, I noticed that somebody apparently has the "squirts". I noticed only once before when we 1st put them into their own cage after we got home that someone left a thin brown puddle, but just chalked it up to excitement. I'm not sure who has the problem, but I think it's Rigel. Both are eating well, both pellets, the PANR they've been on, and hay. Rigel seems to be drinking more water than Sirius, but maybe it's just that he makes more of a racket about it. This may or may not be important, but Rigel is also more inclined to head under the fleece to be on the bass pan, though we keep our house about 70-72 degrees. Both poo a lot, in my hands, on their ledges, they don't care who watches so I know both have normal droppings, but someone definately has the squirts unless their urine is a brown color. Everybody acts like they're happy, adjusting, active, playing, sleeping, interracting, destroying chews. Any ideas of what may be causing this or if it might be normal? What I might do...with children, I'd know to just give them cheese...whether it's something to be concerned with or what I might be looking for for signs of health issues? Could it be the PANR? should I make the gradual switch back to the Mazuri that they started on. I would say from the bag they came with they have not been on the PANR for long...it is nearly full. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Its PEE!!!!! Chin pee can range in color from dark yellow to dark orange brown, almost can look like blood. Since they don't drink much the urine is concentrated, no worries! Loose poo looks more like pudding patties, its very rare to have watery poo, that type is usually accociated with stasis or bloat.

WOW! Speck, you sound like my long lost twin ;D FYI...I think piles & piles of healthy happy poo are a whole lot easier to clean up...doesn't involve running the washing machine near as often The other boys have a darker colored cage liner so guess I never noticed, though this laundry business is getting to be like having the kids all at home again...think I'd better make a 3rd set for all.

Just a month ago when I got Edward and Jasper, I had a pee panic thinking one of them was sick. They really tried to trick me by peeing on a poo pile plus their urine is way darker than my other boys. I gave them some acidophilus and decided to call the vet in the morning. Thankfully I remembered about the urine color before I spent that money! Oh, and I have 4 sets for my boys or I'd be doing laundry all the time myself!

Some chin's pee is just darker than others, and I'd swear that when mine eat rose hips their next "batch" of pee is dark orange. Early morning pee is almost clear, late afternoon, kinda yellowy orange and late night after rose hips is the dark brown orange color. With girls who spray, you can't help but notice color variations. ;D

Well, now that you brought it up, before we got any of the boys I showed Jeff your video Dawnie and HE DID NOT WANT TO GET BOYS till I told him the girls might pee on him when he came near them and that there was rumor that they got chinnie style PMS ;D On day 4 with Rigel & Sirius, Sirius was messing with his stuff and I thought, Oh boy, here we go...have to convince Jeff to get down to "man business" with him. By time Jeff came in the house, Sirius was making a sucker out of himself and Jeff was convinced he had taken care of business on his own since he was doing a lot of what looked like chewing his cud when he was done with his lolipop. So I can tell Jeff, specifically what his job is, what's the general rule of thumb for hair ring checks (how often? indications that it needs doing?) One way or another, I'm sure Jeff is not going to like me much about any of this, unless of course, a chin can remove his own hair ring ;D

Jeff is going to be impressed! Have you seen them "clean" themselves yet? Oh trust me, he was NOT impressed! (Jealous but NOT impressed!) He knew I was going to make that his job and I just don't think he can get his mind wrapped around handling that sort of thing ;D

Some chins never get hair rings, some get them all the time, some will go months or years between them, so the best thing to do is check once a month regardless. Usually the Dad holds them and the Mom does the business, or if you are like me I do it myself unless its a real nasty one and then John helps. I can do all 7 boys in a couple of min.
