It's already getting in the 80s and it's only March! I have the air conditioning on, but it's just not cooling the apartment down enough. I went out and bought some black slate to place in the chinchillas cages off of someone's recommendation. Is black slate safe for them?

They can break slate off. Not sure on that one. Marble tiles or chillers from a pet store are best.
We block off the livingroom with fleece, so it stays cool for them. Regardless of a chin tile, if it gets too hot in your place, nothing will prevent them from getting heat stroke. How hot is it?

Granite is another alternative, but marble stays coldest the longest. Slate is brittle and sharp, I would think that would be too dangerous. You can freeze water bottles and wrap them in fleece, and the chins will either snuggle up to them or drape themselves over them, but if it gets above 75 I would be getting the chins out of there. My central unit has trouble keeping up on the "dog days of summer" so we got the chins a window unit just for them.

Thanks for the responses. It's been getting close to 75. For a few hours one day it got up to 80 until the air kicked in. We're moving in 2 months, where the chins will always be somewhere cool, but I was just looking for alternatives for the time being. I had bought the slate the other day and had in the cage, and they seemed to enjoy it. I took it out now though, since you think it's dangerous.
