Can chins safely use the concrete type bird perches you see in pet stores. Something like the lava rocks/pumice type stones the stores also sell for critter chews. Enquiring minds wnat to know.

Oh, geez... I remember this question coming up a LONG time ago, and I think the answer was no... I believe that although the pumice type surface would have been okay, we were unable to determine what was under that, and if the chins chewed through it, who knows what they would be getting into. Also, their little feetsies aren't designed to wrap around something small and round like bird claws can do. The Lava people make ledges that are great (and safe) for chins: www.petdiscounters.com/c589/Lava-Ledge-p7085.html

The ones I seen yesterday were the big lava stone types that were about two fingers wide. Very similar to the picture on the link you sent.

if they are not the Lava line, I would not risk it. If it was in the bird aisle and not the chin aisle, you dont know what is in them. The Lava there is nothing but a bolt there. The Bird ones usually have something under them. Can you find a picture of the packaging?

Yep, what Tara said. If they were designed for a bird, there will be either plastic or wood under the lava stuff, and that lava was only meant to wear down claws anyway, not to be ingested. Stick to the LAVA brand items that are designed for chins and you will be safe with those.

Isn't there also a type of rock perch designed for chinchillas online? chinontherocks.com
Has anyone looked into these? It would be a similar concept as the concrete (being colder, etc). Just curious.

That is the Chin On the Rocks. I have one in my cage. It is a limestone rock I think. I think a few people on here have them and love those rocks

Phoenix really likes those lava dots. They aren't perches or anything but she does jump on that and then jumps on her ledge. I placed it on her cage and it is almost half way gone. She loves the lava bites though.
I don't buy anything that is designed for birds. Obviously they aren't supposed to be for chins so I don't even look at the things. They do have some neat stuff but I just don't like the idea.
