My man has stumbled upon a supply of scrap marble that he can get for a decent price. But he has to buy it TODAY! Is there anything we need to worry about when purchasing marble or granite for our chinchilla? I don't want to spend the money if it's not going to be useful to us.

I got my husband to cut a few smaller pieces of granite to put in the boys' cages so they can sit on them and keep cool in the summer. They love sitting on the granite. I don't see any problem with getting some. The granite we have is supposed to be to redo the fireplace but who knows when that project will get done.

The scrap marble should be fine. I've gotten scrap pieces of tile many times for my cages. My hubby brings it home from the job site.

What about tile? Are there any issues with polished surfaces? or will a good washing cover that?

Tile like ceramic can be used, but granite or marble stays cooler longer, so it's preferable. I'm not aware of any issues with tile surfaces... I do have one ceramic piece in one of my cages but they all prefer the marble slabs. Just be careful of sharp edges on the scrap pieces.

None of mine liked the ceramic much either, but they all love the granite

Good find!! The Chin-Chillers, which are actually kind of small, are like $8-10 each piece at PetsMart!!

For the future, most places offer scrap for free. You just have to go in and ask.

I know that it may seem kinda strange... and you may feel like a crazy doing it... but you can always ask for scrap from monument companies too. I only know this from when I had Ninji's memorial stone made... they offered me several scraps after I talked to the sales woman about my chinchillas and how they love to cool down on marble/granite.
