Hello everyone. I have question regarding to their gender again! One of my chin gave birth in June 8th. I heard the male babies should be kept in different cage after 8weeks. I am not sure about the gender of my two babies. I tried to see it myself and it seems both are boys, but I am not sure. I live in Sacramento. Any suggestion that can help me determine their gender? My boy friend suggested the vet on the street, but I afraid they have little knowledge about chinchillas because after all chinchillas are not as popular as doggies/ cats. Any suggestions you give is valuable to me. Thanks, Janice

Tina lives in Sacramento, but there are pictures you can use to determine sex if you don't trust your eyes. The boys parts will normally be spaced further than the girls. When Chandler and Piper were little, the only way I could tell them apart was to look at their parts, lol. I know someone will post with more helpful information.

If you can post a picture of their parts we can help you sex them. There is a vertical line that goes from tip of the cone to the vaginal opening, that is visible on new born girls (it will be bright pink). You can see it beter on Georgia's pic below or in the baby pic on the link (looks kind of like an oat). Notice how close her cone is to her anus, obviously she is an older girl and you can clearly see her opening which will not be as apparent on a young one. However you will be able to tell that it is there. It will not be smooth like a boys skin would. www.huggablepets.com/huggablepets/sexing.shtml

Tina can help you. If not, she knows Debbie from Chins To Go who is a breeder and should know as well.

I looked at the pic before. That's why I suspect they are boys. But the problem they don't really let me see it, everytime I tried to flip them over, they just used all the strength to get away. I will see if I can take each baby a pic and post them tonight when I back home from school. If you can post a picture of their parts we cn help you sex them. I took this pic for a different reason, but this is a female. Notice that on her cone (anus is top cone is bottom) there is a vertical line that goes from tip to anus. That is visible on new born girls. Also notice how close her cone is to her anus. www.huggablepets.com/huggablepets/sexing.shtml

Set their front legs on a table and lift their bottoms up by the base of the tail. Or cradle their head in the nook of your arm (elbow) and lift their bottom and have someone take a pic.

Whoa, that sure is a closeup Bethany. You must have a really good camera. It is a fairly cheap Kodak, but I like it better than my moms expensive olympus.

I always held them by there tummies and lifted the tail by the base. You get a great view and you have full control of them.

When Newton was a baby, I held my hand up to the side of the cage and he grabbed the bars above him (they were horizontal) and it became VERY apparent what he was! You could try putting a pellet up to the side of the cage and see if they will go to their hind legs for it...voila...kodak moment!!!

I have a close-up of an adult male... but they are a little harder to tell when they are small like that. But like Bethany said... the easiest way to tell, if they will let you get a good look, is to look for the slit. Here's Moogle's boy parts just for reference.

I think white chins have the best bit pic. I took a real good one of halo last night that I will swap out georgia's for when I get it loaded.

Good pictures, both are boys. I would just take mama out if you still have her with the male, and have a trio. If you don't then at least you will have a male pair.
