Just out of PURE curiousity... would 2 chins be ok in a one level Critter Nation or Ferret Nation? Or would you guys recommend 2 levels? I ask BECAUSE....lol....my b/f gets a say in my new "pet/s" We've recently discussed living together. Anyways, he's not too convinced that TWO chins is such a good idea at this time so I was wondering if the 2 chins in a one-level would be enough room. Because that might be just enough to convince him.... (Listen to me, I've become chin-addicted already!) Oh and once we do "move" (lots of sorting details to come on that one) more levels of a cage will be an option. ;D

I might add (just so the b/f doesn't sound like the bad guy) his reasoning is very true. I live in a small apartment right now and we don't know ALL the ends and outs of owning a chinchilla yet. He does love animals just as much as I do and has even been learning about chins right along with me.

If you are already thinking of 2 chins, then you know you are going to WANT 2 chins someday, and it's MUCH easier to just get a bonded pair in the first place, rather than trying to introduce them yourself. I personally would only keep 2 chins in a one story FN if it was short-term, like if you needed to do it for a couple of months and then you could add on. I think it's actually a bit small for one chin, but better than most cages. Have you looked at prices? Because you can get a 2 story FN for $155 + $7 shipping if you order it from www.ferret.com and have them pricematch the price from www.kennelvet.comThe one story FN is $100 or more everywhere you look, so it's really only another $60 or so to get both levels.

I would say that you probably need the 2 level FN 142 if you want to have 2 chins. This is also a good idea in case the 2 ever don't get along, and you need to separate.

Thanks for the info! Important Detail: *IF* we do get 2 chins, they will already be bonded. That's what brought all this up in the first place.... But if a one level cage is too small then we will stick to one chin. Thanks guys!

Kaykay - is there a reason a 2 story FN is too big? They don't take up any extra floor space. I think hight is important in a chin cage since they like to leap up onto shelves.

It's not really too big, per say, I know that it's just taller but we don't want to get in over our heads too soon. Does that make sense? And I agree with the b/f, when we move and get a much larger place, more animals will definitely be a possibility. But right now, we just want to take things slow, especially with how little space we have at the moment. And being new to the chin world and whatnot.
I'm just getting overly excited and some of the chins we're going to look at are bonded with each other; brothers to brothers and sisters to sisters, etc.

Keep in mind that you need one cage per chin regardless if they are a bonded pair, chins can turn on each other for no reason after being together for years. The two story FN can be converted easily to two cages in a pinch, so that IMO would be the way to go if you want two chins. Chins do fine as singles as long as you give them plenty of attention and outside playtime.

Oh that is a good thing to keep in mind, thank you Dawn. I hadn't realized they could turn on each other after awhile. Plenty of playtime and attention won't be a problem.

You may want to look on some classified ads websites as well. I got my 2 story FN on craigslist for $80. It pays (or saves!) to look.

I say go for the 2 story - it's tall but worth it. I've got Mouse in it by himself. My hope is that he will get along with the twins I'm getting soon. but if not I'll either have 2 cages or add a third story to the FN and he'll have one story and the twins will have 2 (probably 2 cages since I can't see reducing Mouse's space). But either way, I guess you could start witha one story and the add on later (I think that's possible)

It is possible Hafina to buy additional levels It's a little more expensive but possible. BUT...I'm trying to convince the b/f to do the 2 level.......and do 2 chins....... ;D ;D

Well if BF convincing is what we need... I should tell you that chins love to jump from shelf to shelf and so the 2 level is the BEST cage you can have (and i really do believe that). And if you have a 2 level then why not get a bonded pair? Really - it's that simple.

I totally agree with you. Completely. There's just other factors (which I do understand) why he doesn't want to do the 2 chin OR 2 level cage right now. We'll see what happens when we go look at chins..... ;D
