I was told I shouldn't have to worry about doing them. So now seeing that others are doing them I'm going to ask. Should I do them and how often should I do them? They are not breeding only pets.
Then my next question is how do I do it for a little male that won't even let me hold him yet.

Marilynn, take him to a small room like the bathroom or something so if he gets away on you you can catch him easily. You may need to get someone to help. Have them hold him and you do the checking.

My husband helps me with Chinzilla. IMO its sooo much easier that way. And yes they need to be done once a month.

Tito got his first one at 4 months, its early but it can happen. Pet chins get them more than breeders, that is what I was told and its true. I check every two weeks and usually find at least 2 or 3. The more you check the more calm they become. IMO the spoiled chins.com video sucks since you can't see anything so here is mine, much better. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQnOwWwgIsc

my husband isn't looking forward to doing this already. I guess I have to check Furball first most of all because I doubt he has ever been checked before.

Theo is 3 and I doubt he has ever had his *manleys* checked. I am not able to hold him yet, and when I try he cries and bites. I don't have anyone to help hold him for me, so any suggestions? I tried to sit him on my lap and rub his belly and he cried and bit me but I kept him there for a few minutes then I let him go. I figure I will try this again tonight. I am worried about him because he *manleys* drag the ground when he walks. And from the video's and pictures of anatomy it shouldn't hang that far. Am I right or just over worried? I can't get him to the vet for a few weeks for a check up, but I am worried in the mean time.

Your best bet may be to "burrito" him in a towel to keep him still. If his bits are hanging down that low there may very well be a problem. If all else fails, you can take him to the vet who will show you how to do it there.

Just like people, their privates are all different. Some boys' parts are very visible and others are concealed. You can't see a thing with my two mosaics but my two standard boys are obvious: little pink erasers, lol. Ask Tina about her lil man Loomis and how he aint so little.
