I've had Basil for about 8 months now and I still can't figure out some of the things he does. Recently, he's been protesting when I've been rubbing his chest and tummy. Some nights he's fine with it, other nights, he just wants me to stop touching him. Any reason behind this?

I don't really know what to tell you... other than the fact that all four of my older boys are the same way. They really have their days where they can't get enough scritches, and then there are others where they just push me away, and if I don't move, I get the warning bite. I guess that they have their "days" just like we do.

Welcome to CnF! He sounds like a normal chin to me--sometimes they'll let you pet them and other times not so much. Bruce doesn't usually like it when I rub his chest/tummy--in fact, there's only two occasions he'll let me do it (and he wouldn't let me touch his tummy at all until almost a year after I had him). The first was when he got a case of bloat. Since then, he's also let me rub his belly at other times but unfortunately, he'll 'cling' onto my hand and get at a humping session with it or if unable to do that, he'll take care of business himself. Basil sounds like he's just being a chin. That said...we like pictures here

My Specter always kacks when I touch her back. I think she's afraid I'm going to eat her since she can't see what I'm doing. I think it depends on the chin's personality how much they'll allow or not and when.

He is being a teenage chin, they go through some personality changes from around 7 months old to a year or so old. Most become unrulely!

Just from recent experience, I've learned that the 3 year olds are much more comfortable around me than the 1 year old. They mature much slower than other rodents. He'll be fine.

Chins are like fine wine, they get better as they age!

Kuma just hit his 9 months and he is an absolute terror. He was a little doll when he was younger but recently he has started chasing and terrorizing his cagemate, so he has been put into "puberty time out" until he simmers down a bit. (I just separated his and his cagemate's FN). My 3 year old is very calm. I have also noticed with my other boys that they have started calming down as well, Koda is 1 year and 1 month old and he is soo much calmer than he was at say, 6 months.

My Dexter is 7 months old, and has always been an angel....till last night....he got his first oats and went on to terrorize me at playtime!!! Trying to eat walls, ripping cardboard, jumping in my hair, you name it he tried it!!

Ive noticed with Hemi that there are certain places I can pet and scratch and other places he does not like. For example, neck and head area are fine. In fact, he contorts himself just so I can reach that perrrfect spot. But... Once I go close to his butt.. he gets very upset! I guess he's just... sensitive...that way. lol..

And it's just so TRUE, too!! Sally and I had our 3rd year Chinniversary the other night and it just thrills me to see how far she has come in those 3 years. She finally likes scritches!! ;D

I noticed a big difference when Pip reached two; way more trusting and relaxed too.

Chloe is the only chin of mine that will take scritches any time and for as long as I want to give them!! Willow likes them only when she wants them and Bella and Jasmine dont let me at all!

I kinda chalked it up to him being an ornery, teenaged booger. I was thinking though, I know chins hide illness well, but do chins make noise if you touch them somewhere they hurt? Like a dog's squeal?

they certainly can... but they also make noises when you are doing something that displeases them too... they get scared easily as they are prey animals by nature...
