Okay, a friend of mine has a new chin. Literally, the the little girl chin was dumped off on her by a girl she knows, only because at one time my friend had a chin. This friend is not a very good chin parent. She feeds Stella, the new chin, Kaytee hay, pellets and uses Kaytee dust. The cage is not appropriate in height, it has plastic and wire shelves and toys and she frequently lets Stella out in her closet to run around during the day while she is gone. And at the bottom of the cage is one of those doggy training pads for tinkle. This is the second chin that my friend has had, the first one died in less than a month and it was in all the same conditions. I did not have a chin at the time but fell so in love with hers that I had to have one and I learned so much about them. I tried to talk to her about some of these things before the first chin died and she said I was being over the top. She has since told me that I am over the top with my Oskar. I asked politely last night if she would like for me to take Stella because she was talking about how she had gotten a puppy just days before the chin and with school, work, the baby chin, and the puppy she was stretched. But she declined this. Any ideas on how I can maybe get her to change her mind about letting me take the chin or how I can get her to change the the things that she does and so forth?? Also, I noticed on that doggy pad that the pee from the chin was only a yellow/orange color. Not the red that I understand it is supposed to be and what Oskar's is. Is this light color pee a sign of a problem? Or could it be due to that pad or the fact that the chin is only 5 months old?? I am so worried about her and am scared that she is going to die soon too.
My boyfriend agrees with me about how to treat a chin and he loves Oskar and was sad when her first chin died (her boyfriend is my boyfriend's best friend, so he had been around her first chin a lot too) and I was messaging him last night when I was around her and Stella and he just kept telling me not to think about it and not to worry about it because there is nothing I can do about it and I'll only end up upset if I become too involved. Is his advice best? I feel like I should do something but just don't know how....
Any advice about how to deal with this situation would be greatly appreciated. As well as information about the pee.

I would go to karas banner click on it and print each page of proper ownership and let her read it, and tell her you are not over the top. This is how responsible pet owners take care of pets
If all else fails give her the site and CnQ's site to let her look for her self.
Good luck hun! I am sorry she is such a sucky owner!

Allie, I just e-mailed you a printable version of the text on my website. You can send her directly to it, at www.petchinchillas.info - that is an easy URL to remember. All you can do it let her know, what she chooses to do with the situation is entirely up to her. If you ever DON'T want to be friends with her, you could always call the SPCA or the Humane Society and turn her in for animal abuse, but that is a last desperate effort to save the chin.

That is really too bad... some people really do believe that just because the pet store sells it... or that that there is a picture of a chinchilla on it... that it is "good" for chins. I would for sure print the pages from Kara's website and give them to her... but I would suggest things that she should change as a "cooperative, friends bonding" type thing (if that makes sense). Don't treat her like you are an authority figure... try to relate to her being misinformed and tell her that you will help her make the necessary changes to her chins habitat/diet. If she still doubts you, take her on here... there are chinchilla breeders (professional breeders) that belong to this site... she can't really deny the fact that someone that raises champion chinchillas knows a thing or two about the well being of the animal.
As for the pee pad... that sounds really really bad. I can't imagine that the chinchilla doesn't chew on that... and they add stuff to those potty training pads to attract dogs to them (chemicals?/pheremones?). I am sure that there is a possibility that the pee pee pad could change the color of the urine... not to mention be pretty harmful when ingested.
And unsupervised play time? That is so dangerous.... we all know how mischievous chins are... they always find a way to get to where they aren't supposed to be... she really isn't a very chinnie savvy chick...
GOOD LUCK and I hope that you can help her out by either getting her to agree to surrender the chin or by changing the stuff that she's doing.

I'm sorry to hear this--I hate it when someone gets a pet and then refuses to learn how to properly care for it. Good luck!

Aw that is so horrible. The only thing with printing out Kara's site info(all though it's very helpful) alot of ppl have a tendency to say "Well you can't believe everything you read and see on the internet" If that's the case, then see if you can receive any info from a vet. I'd print up horror stories too, that shows what happens in instances when ppl don't properly take care of their chins. That's sad,if she has already lost her chin within a month. I don't see how she doesn't realize she must have done somthing wrong! I hope some how some way you get the chin from her!!!

Could you try get her to join here?? I have birds and so does a friend of mine well she is was a super crappy bird owner I talked her into joining this site I am a member of and she seems to be having a huge turn around in their care. It seems to help when you have others that can kind of gently push in the right direction. I don't think you getting to involved when it comes to our chins or any animal it is often times heartbreaking to watch someone with complete dissregaurd for their health and safety. If asking her to join doesn't work try lead by example make a huge deal out of what you read or saw on the internet. I hope she makes a turn around.

IDK?? I got minimal details from Rick at the end of a phone convo this afternoon... I totally forgot that Ally got Oskar (a nuetered male) from Him... His cage mate "Mia" died during Gustav... So, She may be able to cage them together eventually...
I hope I am not confusing chins here... LOL... I am pretty sure that this is the situation that Rick was speaking of...
