I know babies can't have treats, but what about oats? When can you introduce rosehips and what about apple sticks? She seems to LOVE hay, I dont know if she has ever had it before today!! Thanx guys!!

Sticks are fine (I'm pretty sure, anyway), but wait until she's at least 6 months old for all the other stuff.

Save the seedy head parts of the hay as a treat, she'll like them just as much, and twigs, too. As long as it comes from Momma's hands, it's good! ;D 10 weeks is 2.5 months, and the other 3.5 months 'till she can have "good" treats will pass fast!

I'm in no rush, I feel like a veteran chin owner after this busy year!! LOL... I haven't seen her drink yet though... I've seen her eat food and hay but yet to see Her drink... I did take a nap though... Should I take any measures in order to make sure or do you think she will instinctually drink when thirsty?

I would mark the bottle with a sharpie marker, to make sure. I was worried with Slip but I didnt see hin drink for 4 days, and I knew he was as he was still pooping and the water went down each day after it was filled. She is new, it might take time to find it. I know it helped him to have the bottle next to the food dish

Thanks Tara, I put the water in between the hay and the food dish!! I'm sure she will drink when things calm down... Now off to play with the sweet 7!!

Rule of thumb for treats is none till 6 months old. I actually don't give anything till around the year mark. I like to make sure they have a completely balanced diet through their first year when they are growing the most. It sets the stage for having the healthiest start on life.
Saying that though I'm sure having occational rose hips after six months is a healthy addition to the diet. Too many oats though can put that balance out of wack.

You know I noticed Chewy was not a big fan of the standard vacuum water bottles, barely drank a drop,(when he first came home..he is young too) I switched to the Water Buddy and I worried he wouldn't understand it and "BAM!" he drank like a fiend. I am going to assume that was the water bottle he grew up on. Ok, so that has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation at the moment...I was just reminded of that when you guys talked about the water..hehe

I really like this part of the forum, you def learn something new everyday, I had no idea you weren't supposed to give babies treats until they were 6 months old. Not that this pertains to me at the moment but I'm glad I learned it now for future reference!!

Not that this pertains to me at the moment but I'm glad I learned it now for future reference!! I am almost positive my chin was under 6 months when I brought him home and I didnt' know that either at the time but I didnt' feed my baby any treats for the first month I had him because I didnt' want to 'buy' his love and since then he's only had oats, hips and apple twigs. I'm still not absolutely sure how old he is since he's petstore bought...best guess I have is 'he'll grow a bit bigger' and I got him back in June. So what does that mean? How old is he really? I have no clue. I will have to guesstimate his age based on the knowlege of these fine ppl on this forum and create a 'birthday' to put on calendar! lol

Already!?! Wow, that went quickly! And look how your family has grown since then! LOL! Kacey, he was probably 4-6 months when the pet store got him, and you just guess based on how long you think he was there before you adopted him. I got that with my first two "Oh, she's around 6 months old."

Yes, "oh he'll grow a bit bigger" is not much to go on damn pet stores! so I'll count back and add him to the calendar when I figure it out! lol..meantime...I'm glad that he was about the right age more or less to reasonably sell him off to a noob owner like me. I'm afraid this thread got derailed...not intentional....but in a way since many of us have aquired pet shop chins, it is a good place for this...best to at least find out if your chin is over 6 months old minimum so you know if you can even treat your new lil guy a bit or not.
