Hi! I'm new to the site and a new chin mommy! I got Oskar on Sunday and due to an address mistake when ordering my chin mansion from Quality Cage his cage wasn't here when I had planned. Without any other options I borrowed a friends chin cage (her chin died a couple of weeks ago) and bleached and dried it and used that until his cage came in yesterday morning. After my boyfriend spent several hours putting it together (which wasn't that hard) and adding shelves (which turned out to be difficult) we put Oskar into his new home! He loves it but....he is pooing everywhere!!!! In the other cage he didn't do this and I would have noticed Sunday when we went to get him if the cage he was in was this messy. Its normal poo, its just everywhere! Is this normal? Or is he "marking his territory?" I know if he pees on his shelves to clean it was 50-50 water-vinager, do I brush it off and do the same here? Or just brush it off? I'm new and just don't know. Plus his cage is in our office where both of our desks are and I where I study. Being a biochem/chem major I'm in here a lot and don't want it to start smelling ever. Thank you guys in advance!!

its normal for chins to poo everywhere. the are messy little buggers! I sweep my shelves off every day or so just so it doesnt look so messy. chins rarely smell, just keep his cage clean and he should be ok. what are you using for bedding? lots of people here use liners with a small litter box in the corner, makes it easier for cleaning.

The poos should be easy to pick up without leaving any mess to be normal. Mine poo a ton every day. In fact, I can be vacuuming and turn around and there's another pile all over the rug. If they are getting adequate hay, pellets, and sticks to chew, that's normal. Maybe he wasn't getting enough roughage before. We all use liners here instead of shavings. I buy fleece blankets at Wal-greens and cover the tray and tuck it under. Every night I vacuum with my shop vac and every other day I change the liners and throw them in the wash with a little pine sol. I air dry them. I use a double layer but no other absorbant. You are free to post pics. We like poo here.

Poo is GOOD!!! LOL! It means everything inside him is working just the way it should be. ;D Trust me, it's when you DON'T see massive piles of poo everywhere that you should start to worry. We are all poo obsessed, because lack of it is often the first sign of trouble. Their poo doesn't really have a smell, regardless of the amount. It's the urine that will smell if not changed frequently enough. You'll have to change his bedding weekly, and it's also a good idea to clean his favorite pee corners every night, just to keep it all super fresh for him. I know if you got him from Rick that means you read my site : www.petchinchillas.info so you are probably way better prepared than the average new chin owner!

Lots of poo is normal! Your boy was probably just adjusting to his new home at first and maybe didn't eat as much as normal the first night. It's a GOOD sign that he is pooing lots. It means he is eating well. The poo itself doesn't smell and chins urinate far less than other pets so they are pretty oderless unless you let the cage go for a long time. Spot clean the urine spots every day. Having a litter pan like already mentioned is a great way to keep everything fresh and clean smelling. Vacuuming up poos each day will also keep things looking nice.

They poo a whole bunch. And they throw it all over too! My guy kicks it out as far as he can to see how far across my bed he can make it. There is poo all over my house, and he's not even allowed everywhere! I think he gives it to the dog to throw around too!

Yup. They poo alot. Helps when keeping an eye on their health (lots of samples). They like to hide illness, so changes in poo will be a sure indicator that something is up.
I swear sometimes they are part monkey, cause they fling it too. Or one will sit above the wheel and poo while the other one is running and it behaves much like spin art.
Sounds like a healthy Oskar!

You shoulda seen me trying to figure out how they were getting it 5ft + from the cage. I was thinking, "Dang they've got a good arm!". Then I was sitting near the cage one day and got nailed in the forehead. Mystery solved!
