Ok, seeing I am getting my Chica next week, I am just diving into everything I can find..
I haven't found it or maybe just overlooked it..
Are they ok alone?
Thanks

They can be FINE alone, if you give them lots of attention. Chins are usually pretty social, and if they are housed alone, they will "bond" with their owner and crave human attention. I keep mine in pairs (soon, anyway!) because although I spend lots of time with them in the evening, I like to think of them as having someone to cuddle with/talk to during the daytime, too.

Some like to be alone, and some like friends. I have some with a buddy and some without, but I'm working on getting them together. In the wild they would live in colonies of 100 or more.

I will eventually get my chins a partner. I'm sure they communicate a lot better with someone that speaks the same language. I'm not to worried about my chin trying to bond with me. As long as they are happy, I don't mind being ignored.

That's me, too - I LOVE being so close to Tami, but I would much rather her accept Evie to talk to and snuggle with, even if it means she won't love me so much anymore.

Oh, I wish some of mine would buddy up!! I tried getting Rocky a buddy, ummm nope. Then I tried Leo and Emmitt in a cage together. They spent a lot of time side by side and playtime went well. I had a rumble as soon as I put them in a cage together to clean the other's. Grace is still in, can't think of the word (separated from the others as she is being treated for giardia). Phoebe is with her babies upstairs by herself and that leaves Lily by herself, LOL. They all have me though!! It's so nice coming downstairs and having all of them at the front of their cages looking at me like "mommy come to me!!!". Especially Emmitt (I hate to pick favs as I love them all but it would be Emmitt and Gracie). Trish, what I would suggest with her is if you eventually want to get her a mate, is there a rescuer near by that you can schedule a play date with? I did that with Rocky. He is very aggressive and I didn't just want to buy another chin in the hopes of having a cage mate. It ends up, he does not do AT ALL well with other chins in his area, so I'm glad I had the play date. She is going to love having you though!!

I think the real question here is...can YOU just have 1 chin? They are awfully addictive! You will see once you get your new baby

Mine are kept as singles and they do great! Keara has been by herself for 5 years and she's wonderful! Seren has been along for almost a year and she's VERY happy. I used to have group play time with Keara and another chinnie I had, but she past way a over a year ago, and Keara and Seren does not get along!

It seems it could open your chin up to so many possible bad things. Especially if it is rescues that you don't really know any details about, health etc. Quarentine is even suggested when the chin comes from the best of breeders. Sorry.. your suggestion just made me go hummm???

I've heard of people doing that before, and it DOES sounds risky, and a little scary. No two chins will ever bond instantly, they are too naturally wary for that. Slow and steady is a better way to introduce any two animals.

I have 3 pairs and 3 singles. The singles are fine by themselves, though I'm trying to get one more pair (dunno who I'm going to try and pair, maybe Baloo and Hemi).

What Sasha said, they all have their own personality. My two brothers have been together since they were born so I would never try to separate them and I just can't imagine them fighting (but it could happen one day).
I could tell that Lou was lonely when I got him but the brothers wouldn't accept him. Being a breeder, he was raised around all kinds of chins. I was very lucky that he accepted Carby and that I picked the right one.
I think if I had a chin that just didn't like other chins, I wouldn't mind having him live singely and play just with me.
You always have to be prepared for either case.

Trisha, if been following this entry and thought I should throw my " two cents" in. I have had one chin for five months and after finding this group started asking the same question. I wish for Missy ( my chin) that I had gotten another chin at the same time , but being a new owner and seeing what is involved in introducing a second later on, I feel I should wait. My family gives Missy a lot of attention : she gets a half hour to an hour of outside play every evening and we make an effort to visit her cage during the day . They make adorable pets and I wish you luck with your new chin.

Kara, you are funny.. Yep, the rescue is about 2 blocks from my home. I walk there to visit. . .
I didn't get to go today nor tomorrow. I am in workshops until 6 both days by the time I get home and cook for my boys, bath the baby, it'll be just too late.. I am missing her though.. lol
I went shopping for things for her instead.. the internet is great.. I just spent close to 100 on her wheel, hammock and some other cute things.. i felt like I was christmas shopping..
anyone use a cooling shelf? I saw that at 2 different pet stores yesterday.. it basically is just a piece of granite. but claims to remain cooler than room temp ..
