Since this thread is back near the top I'll ask a question I have about hair ring checks here. I try to check Dobby once a month when I weigh him. He still squirms and stresses over it. Now I have Cedric. How long should I give him to settle in before I attempt my first check on him?

Give him a month or so unless you see him doing excessive "cleaning".
