Yes, Bewford is still looking for a home although there is a family who has shown interest in him and came to visit him this week. He was very timid with them and hid in his hidey-house most of the time although he took a rosehip and apple stick from them... he didnt want to be touched though.

That's great about Stratus/Momo and Aury!! I'm glad they found good homes. I've always been a sucker for rescued animals. Is Bewford still in need of a home?
And an update from Stratus' new mommy: his new name is Momo! He is adjusting well and enjoys playing on the couch with them and snuggling up with his new duck snuggle buddy!
Yep, now we have 2 Momo's!! I know the name from the Avatar cartoon, but that was the first time I'd heard it...

Re: Walnut « Result #9 on Dec 21, 2009, 7:20pm »
The word "rope" gives me pause, as some toys for birds are made with that soft white rope, but those are not suitable for chins. Better safe than sorry, and exchange it like Andrea suggested, for anything in the LAVA line - dots, ledges, bites, etc.
Ok so my mom, being the wonderful mommy she is, got us a PetCo gift card for the holidays to buy the incoming boys some stuff. She also purchased a hanging toy for the cage. I checked it over and it looks OK to go except the middle of the rope is threaded through a Walnut shell (with the nut still inside). I'm assuming that's a no go? Should I just crack the nut off? or is this an indication that I should just return the whole thing and buy something else.

It's rare to find someone getting rid of chinchillas that look healthy and with a semi suitable cage. I hope she finds a good home for them. No, I can't take them either, lol. I'm still getting used to having my girls.
Check out the cage they come with. While I don't think the top is very safe with the C&C grids, it is neat what they did with the fiddlesticks. I think she used cable ties. Kinda neat, and NO I can't take these girls in! LOL, I thought about it but I am FULL!

Aurum has also found a home for Christmas!! A woman from Fresno came with her fiance and her sister who does rabbit rescue to come look at the chinchillas today. They thought Aurum was so cute and after holding and petting him, decided they wanted to adopt him. Merry Christmas, Aurum!
And an update from Stratus' new mommy: his new name is Momo! He is adjusting well and enjoys playing on the couch with them and snuggling up with his new duck snuggle buddy!

they do look greasy but I want to add that Mouse (who came from PetCo) gets regular dusting and in photos he often looks like that. He just doesn't have a great coat no matter how well we both try.

Yeah, when you handle a chin the grease from your skin gets on their fur. Without proper dustbaths, chins look pretty pitiful, and it's uncomfortable for them as well.

A while back when I was bored, I was surfing exotic pets on the internet and this site kept coming up. They seemed more like an import/export company than an exotic pet ranch so I ignored the website. A shame that they could get away with harming 27,000 animals. And how many customers spend thousands of dollars and got compromised pets?
it doesn't say what kind of rodents... or am I missing it?
I'm thinking rats maybe. Animals include hedgehogs, iguanas (and other reptiles and amphibians i.e. frogs and turtles), chins, wallabies, kinkajous, slothes, scorpions, and more.

Ferrets IN, MI, OH, TN « Result #38 on Dec 14, 2009, 7:42pm »
My husband’s dumb friend keeps getting pets and then wants me to re-home them once he is tired of them. I have told him no more, but like I said he isn't that bright.
Anyways, he has 2 male ferrets and a cage. I'm not sure what kind of cage, but he said it was a big one. I'm also not sure if they have been neutered and de-scented, but is that a standard thing to do?
I didn't talk to him Matt did, but if anyone would be interested he is asking $300 for them and the cage. Since it is Christmas break I can't ask around at school, so I thought maybe someone on here might want them.
My dad goes to MI for work, so I might be able to get a rr going up that way. I'm only 1.5 hrs from Nashville, and my interview is Friday in Louisville.

I found a home for Stratus! I've been receiving so many e-mails lately from people who I do not feel comfortable adopting to or won't even take the time to fill out the chinchilla questionnaire, I was beginning to lose hope. This e-mail was like a diamond in the rough - she's researched, is a previous cavy owner and rabbit owner, and Stratus will be the only pet in the house with her and her husband. It's a perfect situation and I'm so glad she will be giving him such a great home.

She still has the ebony girl b/c Pam is VERY picky about who she adopts her chins out to. Her rescue chins look a helluva lot better than some breeders' chins out there. If things hadn't worked out with Carlos then I was seriously considering adopting those two sweet little grey brothers.
Now, some time in the near future Carlos might want a buddy and I know exactly who to contact.

I should say I only have 2 wheels but I do see Mouse and Monkey "getting into it" over the wheel they share. So it's not tops on the list, but I think it's a good "wish list" item. When I had the three together they NEEDED 2 wheels
It is 8 1/2 hrs. for me to Ft. Collins (one way). Even if I went N and took I-70 to Goodland, KS (which is 19 mi. E of the CO border), that'd be 5 hours one way. I'm just South of Wichita, KS
I could meet you in Colby. That'd be 4.5 hours of driving time for both of us.

Two wheels might be overkill, unless you have money to burn. Definitely put in 2 food stations and 2 water bottles, that will help minimize the squabbling.

Re: Attaching two peices of wood « Result #62 on Dec 2, 2009, 3:36pm »
If you are going with a small peice on top of a big peice - like for the "poo catcher" edges - wood glue is usually good enough. I use clamps for the first 24 hours while they are drying. You can also use a heavy duty staple gun to staple the edges together JUST until the glue dries, and then you remove the staples.

Thanks, Lisa. I would be able to drive to Nevada, maybe around Reno. And I'm not sure what part of CO you live in, or what part of Kansas LL lives, but maybe she could meet at the CO/KS border?
Now if the above would work, we would need someone who'd be able to help from Nevada, through Utah, to CO.
What would be great is if I could hitch a ride with somebody from CA who is planning on attending the CO state show in February up in Fort Collins. I just don't think I can make the entire trip on my own as I've never really driven outside CA and am scared to drive in snow...

We use gorilla glue and biscuit cutter and biscuits. Works wonders.
That is how we made the "middle" shelf in Slippers cage. I would not trust just glue to hold them. I would really recommend the biscuit cut and the biscuits

BTW - my twins only started to fight long after I had them bonded with Mouse. So I had a bonded trio for a while. Then Mouse started to bully bugs and Monkey got in on the action too. So now Bugs has one level of the FN and Mouse and Monkey who are still bonded have 2 levels. I would love to get a secon FN 142 for BUGS and let Monkey and Mouse have the three level.
Even with a bonded pair you should have two of eveything so they have less to fight over 2 wheels, 2 water bottles, 2 food dishes, 2 hay bins...

There is always a chance that brothers will fight so you just never know. But everyones ideas for having a big enough cage to seperate them should this happen is the best idea so far. The pics of Tara's cage are great and will give you some tips on how to set it up for them.

Sorry for the slow reply...(I've tried to stay off the forums over the weekend to try to get ready for the Dec. rush.) Rigel & Sirius, brothers, are the ones that were having an issue. I think that started because Chipper escaped while the brothers were in QT and might have gotten into R & S's area. They are back together now and absolutely no signs of trouble between them. When R & S came out of QT we gave them playtime in the corral and Sirius went straight to M & C's cage and Chipper & him went immediatley to trying to bite each other through the bars. Now we have them all housed as pairs again and take 1 cage out of the corral before giving the other 2 playtime and this is working beautifully. So there was trouble in the brothers' cage, but I think it was because Rigel felt threatened by Chipper...I hope that makes sense the way I've worded it. Mason & Chipper are not brothers and have been together for over a year with never a sign of trouble.

Jack and LJ shared a womb and a cage for the first 2-3 years of their life. Then they started fighting and I had to separate them.
Now, this may have happened anyway but at the time we had Miss Sybil in the same room because we had just moved and no spot to put her at the time.
She now is living in my youngest daughter's room, but the boys still fight with each other initially when they get out for play at the same time. Usually a short quarrel and then they go about their business. (They rarely - if ever - get playtime together anymore)

Sounds good to me. You really never know if they'll get along or not but chances are good that two baby brothers will be fine. If you keep a really close eye on them you can usually clue into little signs of stress such as sudden fearfulness or fur missing and then you have to step in immediately and separate them.
Re: Ack! Bonded Pairs! Please Respond! « Result #87 on Nov 29, 2009, 9:41pm »

Re: Ack! Bonded Pairs! Please Respond! « Result #88 on Nov 29, 2009, 9:33pm »
That is a nice cage. I had that cage You dont need to divide them unless they fight, they can share the whole cage I can show you pics of how we set it up, if you like?
Re: Ack! Bonded Pairs! Please Respond! « Result #89 on Nov 29, 2009, 9:30pm »
Ok we've talked it over and now we're thinking of springing for the next height up if we get the two of them.... it's 30X18X48. Divided in half each chin would get 30X18X24? and that would be temporary. The plan has always been to build a bigger cage once we had the space and we hope to have the space in the next 2-3 years. Andrew would keep a perfect fitting board on hand. if we have to separate. Also we'd probably purchase a quarantine cage if one got sick....that much is common sense if you're getting two of any animal I think.

Yeah, now we're talking Kara... throw out all the living room furniture and put up wall to wall cages with chins in them instead.
Tara, I was thinking you were talking about Susan's boys that Barbi got and they are definitely not brothers but now I realize that you were referring to KR's boys. I don't know if they are brothers or not.

Yeah, that is my point as well. If you are really thinking about getting both, your best bet would be to get a bigger cage, even if you have to sacrifice furniture for it. Tara threw out a whole couch to get another cage in her living room...

There is always a risk of fighting when you have more than one chinchilla in a cage and that is a risk you have to decide to take or not to take.
Since these two boys are babies and brothers then I personally would be willing to take that risk but that doesn't mean everyone would. I know of some like Lauren and others that absolutely will not have pairs and then there's others like myself that have had good success with pairs and are willing to take the risk. Everyone has to make their own decision in the end.
No, but I'm thinking that they will be fine together, at least for the first year until the hormones kick in...
I'm sure that would be fine, but she already stated she's limited on space... so what happens when the year is over and the hormones do kick in?
I've seen what chins can do to each other when they are aggressive.. it isn't pretty. I'm not trying to be rude or anything... I've just been through hell and I would hate for someone else to go through what I did...

Re: Ack! Bonded Pairs! Please Respond! « Result #100 on Nov 29, 2009, 8:07pm »
18" seems really short to me for a chinchilla. Unless you're going to go with a taller cage just in case then stick with just one chin. If you haven't bought the cage yet and you're still looking, then look for a taller one that if need be could be made into two. A 5' cage which is 60" would give each chin a 30" space which is pretty good as long as you have some decent ledges for hopping and of course a wheel would be great.
